Original 1907 real photo postcard (RPPC) documenting Bernard Hall No. 2, located in Helmetta, Middlesex County, New Jersey, a purpose-built American Snuff Company company town and one of the best-documented industrial communities of the early 20th century.

Helmetta was established in the late 19th century to support the operations of the American Snuff Company, later absorbed into the American Tobacco Company trust. The town was carefully planned, with housing stratified by role and status. Bernard Hall No. 2 was part of a small group of large, numbered residences reserved for factory managers and senior personnel, distinct from worker cottages.

The photograph shows the imposing shingle-style structure with broad wraparound porches and elevated siting, architecture intended to convey permanence, authority, and corporate order. Two figures seated in the foreground provide human scale and reinforce the building’s institutional character.

Of particular importance is the contemporary handwritten manuscript note across the top of the image, which explains that the building was occupied by managers of the Snuff Factory. This annotation directly documents the function of the structure within the American Snuff Company’s housing hierarchy, elevating the postcard from a town view to a primary-source industrial record.

The reverse is an undivided-back postcard format consistent with 1907 usage and bears a 1¢ green Franklin stamp. The card was mailed that year and is addressed to a professional recipient, indicating purposeful correspondence rather than tourist use.
