Vintage Japanese Clay Bell Dorei

This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, or dorei . Representing the animals of the zodiac, this bell is in the shape of a horse ( uma ). It is mostly white with red, green, and gold accents. One side of the saddle has a painted plum blossom. It has a small clay ball inside and has a red string attached to the top.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago), when they were said to ward off evil spirits.

• Good condition considering age. Some scuff marks and discoloration. Wear and tear due to age. Please see the photos carefully.
