A St. George Building Society Dragon 1980's Issue Green Plastic Coin Money Box.
The St George Happy Dragon money box in green in good condition. This is an early issue sealed model which would have been damaged ripping the bottom access bung out of the plastic. Condition is good with some dust from years on display, a gentle clean needed. The plastic is very thin around the nostrils and his right hand nostril has a small hole. Please review the photos carefully.
This early issue is not as tall as the later issue measuring approximately 16cm high. It also features sticker labels for the StGeorge brand on the base and two blue/black on white eyes on the face. The mould is different with fewer scales on the arms, but generally very similar to the later issues.
The ‘Happy Dragon' campaign was used throughout the 1980's and 1990's. There are two versions of the Dragon character that I am currently aware of. This one has his arms akimbo and a rather stern look with the chin tucked-in. This style is a later issue with the St George brand moulded into the base plate. The earlier issue some had stick-on labels for St George at the base and ‘eyes' over the plastic eyes. My best guess is the ones without the stickers were a cost-saving version. There is then a later style with the head more upright and the left hand raised as if to say Hi, I am a happier looking dragon?
