Founded in 1903 by Julius Chein in a New York City loft,
J. Chein & Co. became one of the most beloved names in the "Golden Age" of American toys. Known for their vibrant, high-quality tin lithography, the company produced everything from iconic
Cracker Jack prizes to elaborate
carnival rides.
During the 1940s and 50s, Chein’s fleet of
tin wind-up boats became staples of the American toy box, prized for their sturdy construction and reliable clockwork mechanisms.
The Speed Cruiser: Features & Condition
- 100% Operational: All 12 boats have been individually tested. Each wind-up mechanism is strong, smooth, and fully functional—a rare guarantee for vintage mechanical toys.
- Mint "New Old Stock" Graphics: These boats have never been played with. The lithography is bright and crisp, featuring the classic mid-century colors Chein is famous for.
- Condition Note: As is common with factory-stored tin, there are minor areas of "box rub" (small paint scuffs) where the tin contacted the cardboard dividers over the decades. This is a hallmark of authentic NOS items and not a result of play wear.
