Up for purchase is a matching 2-volume antique lot of Fyodor Dostoevsky works, published by The Macmillan Company (New York) in the sought-after uniform cloth series translated by Constance Garnett.
INCLUDED VOLUMES:
1. "The Possessed" (1916) – True First American Printing of this edition. Dated 1916 on the main title page.
2. "The Insulted and Injured" (1917) – Early Uniform Series Printing. Stated "New Edition, January, 1917" on the copyright page.
CONDITION REPORT:
Both books were sourced from the same estate and feature matching vintage pencil inventory notations ("K10 / 135") on the front flyleaf.
Exterior: Original greyish-blue cloth boards show standard age wear, corner rubbing, and softening to the spine ends. Spines are sun-darkened/browned with age; original gold gilt lettering is dulled/faded.
The Possessed Interior: Front inner hinge is split/cracked down the gutter line, exposing the binding cheesecloth mesh underneath. The text block itself remains bound and textually complete.
The Insulted and Injured Interior: Structurally sturdier copy; mild straining to internal gutters but hinges are holding well.
Pages: Natural, uniform age-toning/browning to paper margins (typical for WWI-era paper stock). Text blocks are clean, unmarked, and free of heavy foxing.
