SNP election communications for the February and October 1974 general elections and associated documents.  "It's Scotland's oil" was a widely publicised slogan used by the SNP during the 1970s in making the economic case for Scottish independence. It was argued that the discovery of North Sea oil off the coast of Scotland, and the revenue that it created, would not benefit Scotland to any significant degree while Scotland remained part of the United Kingdom. 

1974 was a breakthrough year for the SNP, gaining seven seats in the House of Commons in February and 22% of the Scottish vote, rising to eleven seats and 30% of the vote in October.  Aberdeen South was held at both elections by the Conservative Iain Sproat who had narrowly ousted Donald Dewar of the Labour Party in the 1970 election.  The SNP achieved 20% of the votes in Aberdeen South in October 1974, a percentage not exceeded by the party until they took the seat in the 2015 general election.
