RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, Scotland, is a primary operational hub for the UK’s Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) Force. It acts as a central location for advanced maritime surveillance, submarine hunting, and airborne early warning (AEW).
Supply and sustainment operations at the base are facilitated by a combination of military personnel and industry partners: - Boeing Defence UK: Boeing has a large contingent of onsite teammates handling engineering support, mission systems, and supply chains for the base's ISTAR assets. - 42 (Torpedo Bomber) Squadron: Based at Lossiemouth, this is the ISTAR Operational Conversion Unit responsible for training aircrew and engineers for both the Poseidon and Wedgetail fleets.
The main ISTAR aircraft supported at RAF Lossiemouth include: -"P-8A Poseidon MRA1: Advanced maritime patrol and submarine-hunting aircraft. - E-7 Wedgetail AEW Mk1: Airborne early warning and control aircraft, which operates out of purpose-built facilities like the Aden Wing.
