The 1971 Le Mans 24 Hours saw Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep win for the Martini Racing Porsche 917K, setting a distance record of 5,335 kilometres at an average of 222 km/h that stood unbroken until 2010. Their car ran a magnesium-alloy chassis built for outright speed, and the pair followed team orders to manage the race rather than chase the sister Wyer-Gulf cars. It was the final Le Mans for the 917 before regulation changes pushed it aside, and a landmark in Porsche's golden run at the Sarthe. Sutton's images capture the era's pit-lane intensity.
