The 1979 Race of Champions at Brands Hatch on 15 April was a non-championship Formula 1 fixture and a fan favourite of the period, run over the Kent circuit's demanding undulations. The race is best remembered for Gilles Villeneuve's drive in the Ferrari 312T4, recovering from an early excursion to chase down Mario Andretti's Lotus 79 and take the win, with Nelson Piquet's Brabham-Alfa second. The Marlboro and Daily Mail backing reflected an era when tobacco sponsorship and national newspapers fuelled British motorsport, and Brands Hatch hosted top-flight grand prix machinery outside the world championship calendar.
