Old Lower Sepik Haus Tambaran Mask – Early 20th Century

A fine old carved wooden mask from the Lower Sepik region of Papua New Guinea. Unlike many examples currently offered on the market, the piercing of this mask was clearly executed with a traditional blade rather than a modern drill, an important indicator of age and authenticity.

This is a Haus Tambaran (Spirit House) mask, intended to be suspended from a post or architectural element within the men's ceremonial house rather than worn during performance. As a result, the perimeter remains unpierced, distinguishing it from dance masks designed to be attached to a costume or worn on the face.

The mask displays a strong sculptural presence with its elongated oval form, prominent hooked nose, and deeply carved facial features. The surface has developed a rich dark chocolate-brown patina consistent with age, handling, and long-term ceremonial use.

A genuine old Sepik carving with excellent display qualities and increasingly difficult to find in untouched condition.
