This is a very nice KAY KB-15B "Star-Ter Series" Short Scale 30" bass
that is in very decent shape. Paint is original with minor dings, etc,
but I have not touched it up whatsoever. I figured I'd leave it as-is.
Easily touched up with black nail polish or black marker.
Here are
the upgrades/mods done: I removed the original 2-saddle bridge that is
difficult to intonate, and installed a Fender-style 5-screw hole bridge in its
place. The 4 individual saddles allow for much better intonation and
height adjustment. I also replaced the original tuners. They still
worked, but were fairly rough to turn, so I installed a newer, more
modern set. The footprint of these tuners is identical to the old ones,
so no extra holes were drilled. These work nice and smooth.
The
old pickup had been replaced with a different one, but it was very
weak. This one is an AlNiCo pickup, manufactured by Artec and is
advertised as 8.2K of DC resistance. This is just a nice, clean and
clear pickup and is an excellent choice for this short scale bass. I
chose cream-colored pickup covers to go with the volume and tone knobs
and the nut on top of the fretboard. I think it kind of highlites the
look of this bass; just nice and clean. I also took this bass out and
played a couple of songs at my last gig..... it definitely received a
LOT of attention and positive comments!
I have strung this with
brand new D'Addario EXL 160S strings - medium gauge. This bass plays and
sounds excellent! It is also very light and sits nice and easy on the
shoulder.
Frets are in very nice shape with lots of life left on them. Action is medium-low and feels great.
This bass was previously listed without the case, but I am re-listing it with the case it came in (had plans of keping it, but none of my other basses fit!). It looks to be an older case, but still in very nice shape and includes the key (when using the key, insert with the teeth down and rotate it 1 full turn. I thought it didn't work at first, but it works fine).
I will ship this as soon as payment goes through, via the carrier of my choice, insured and signature required.
Please have a look at all the pictures, as they are also a part of this description. As always, feel free to contact me with questions/comments - they are most welcome! Thanks for looking,-Lenny
