Absolutely incredible. Antique and Rare. 1920 - 1930s
Ostby and Barton 10K gold pendant with a 16" 10-14K gold chain.
The pendant is in excellent condition, created in a geometric shape. Handmade open design with two gold leafs on either side of a beautiful red spinel gemstone followed by a rice pearl drop.  Authentic: Pendant bail is stamped O10KB. The Spinel is real, tested with a 365nm UV light, glows bright red. Tested with thermal conductivity indicate spinel. The 10K gold pendant acid test was positive. The pendants widest point is 12mm. From top of bail to bottom of rice pearl 42mm.
The chain can be assumed original Ostby and Barton due to the type of chain, cable chain round and dainty link. The spring ring is not original it has been replace with a generic spring ring, not gold. The chain was acid tested and was confirmed to be 10-14K gold, which indicates the gold is a high 10K. Please see the "Lets be real" information below.

A little bit of history: Ostby and Barton Co., was founded in 1879 by Engelhart Cornelius Ostby and Nathan B. Barton.  Co-founder Engelhart Ostby was a first-class passenger on the RMS Titanic. He tragically perished in the 1912 sinking, while his daughter, Helene, survived. His body was later recovered and returned to Providence

let's be real:

  • Pre-1912 Edwardian Era (Antique): Rings crafted while co-founder Englehart Ostby was still alive (he tragically perished on the RMS Titanic in 1912). At this time, genuine, natural stones were more standard, though early synthetic rubies were just emerging. The height of their pendant production, characterized by filigree, delicate gold swirls, and dangling natural pearls.
  • 1920s–1930s (Art Deco): The golden age of Ostby & Barton's synthetic jewelry. They frequently mounted Verneuil-created, vibrantly colored synthetic sapphires, spinels and rubies in highly detailed, geometric filigree settings.
  • Cable Chains: The standard, go-to chain for antique filigree and lavaliere pendants, consisting of uniform interlocking oval or round links.
  • Paperclip Chains: A historically popular, open-link style featuring elongated links with shorter, round connecting links.
  • Rope Chains: A twisted, textured look created by weaving multiple metallic links together in a spiral or rope-like pattern
  • Original factory chains: These are period-accurate, often matching the karat gold of the pendant (such as 10k or 14k) or sterling silver, and may feature early spring-ring or barrel clasps.
