THE CUP (1999)
A celebrated, light-hearted Himalayan sports comedy, the film is based on the true story of Tibetan refugee novice monks who are swept up in 1998 World Cup soccer fever. Defying skeptical elders, the young monks stage a desperate, creative secret plot to rent a TV and satellite dish to watch the final match at their remote monastery.
Directed by Tibetan lama Khyentse Norbu (in his feature debut) and filmed on location at the Chokling Monastery in Bir, India, the movie explores the universal clash between modern passions and ancient, centuries-old monastic traditions. It is widely praised by critics like Roger Ebert for being a heartwarming, spiritually grounded comedy.
