Product description

Mahongwé Reliquary of Gabon. Wooden piece covered with copper wires. Seniority: 70s. Piece on base.

The Mahongwe. The form, ovoid and stylized, is made with a wooden soul surmounted by metal plates. It is low thickness, concave, decorated with a copper plate on the front which separates it vertically. Eyes are represented by two cabochons, the nose is formed by a thin perpendicular plate. The rest of the face is covered with flattened copper strips placed vertically and stapled. Other strips are represented before the eyes. At the top, we observe a protuberance surrounded by metallic wire. The handle is covered in the upper part of copper or brass wire. The base widespread and forms like a sculpted handle of plan perpendicular to the face. This handle has metal plates but also leaves the apparent wood. Some of the copper plates are staked, chopped or hammered. This type of figure is a symbolic representation of the ancestor's face, many have linen identification coats of line with copper patterns. The lines, on the back, would be stylized braids and the protubence of the summit, a bun. The handle that sometimes forms a more pronounced diamond would be a stylization of the arms. The base of the sculpture was attached to a basket, in this way, the whole formed an entity and represented an entire anthropomorphic figure. Related to his function, the guard would represent a spirit, an ancestor whose protection we are looking for.
