Geronimo (1829–1909) was a prominent leader and medicine man of the Bedonkohe band of the Apache people who became famous for resisting the expansion of the United States into Apache tribal lands in the American Southwest. For decades, he led raids and guerrilla campaigns against both Mexican and U.S. military forces, seeking to defend his people's way of life and territory. After years of pursuit, Geronimo surrendered to U.S. forces in 1886, marking the end of major Apache armed resistance. He spent the remainder of his life as a prisoner of war, later becoming a well-known public figure who appeared at exhibitions and events, including the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition. Today, Geronimo is remembered as a symbol of Native American resistance, courage, and determination in the face of overwhelming challenges.
