Crazy Horse (c. 1840–1877) was an influential Oglala Lakota war leader who played a central role in resisting United States expansion into the northern Great Plains. He became widely known during the Great Sioux War of 1876, where he helped lead Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho forces in coordinated resistance against the U.S. Army. His most famous military success came at the Battle of the Little Bighorn, where Native forces defeated Lt. Col. George Custer’s 7th Cavalry. Crazy Horse was known for his skill in warfare, his humility, and his refusal to allow himself to be photographed, which contributed to his legendary status. After years of conflict and increasing pressure on his people, he surrendered to U.S. forces. He was killed in 1877 while in custody at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, under disputed circumstances. Today, he remains a powerful symbol of Native resistance and leadership. |
