This vintage decorative railway kerosene hand lighting lamp is great for collectors. Oil-burning lamps have long been an important part of Egyptian railway signaling systems, used for communication, safety, and lighting. Known as marker lamps, they were hung on rolling stock such as guards' vans to indicate the rear of the train at night, and also used on steam locomotive tenders for identification and safety.
This type of lamp was introduced to railways around 1860 and was used for over a hundred years. Oil lamps were phased out during the late 1960s and early 1970s when battery lamps became standard. Railway lighting included stations, yards, engines, rolling stock, signals, signal boxes, and crossings, with various types of lamps used for different railway purposes.
