Known for it's styling and craftsmanship, the KR series is Kenwood’s flagship line from the '70s. Beautiful large and balanced tuning knobs, blue & amber glow of the scale and carefully selected fonts are the trademark of this line. Released in 1974, the KR-3400 has high-end performance making it a perfect choice for those who prefer quality over volume!

The Kenwood KR-3400 is a classic, entry-level AM/FM stereo receiver produced between 1974 and 1976. Highly regarded by audiophiles for its warm "analog" sound and iconic silver-face design, it remains a popular choice for vintage audio collectors and smaller home stereo setups.

The front panel has a large Tuning knob flanked with Speaker and Input selectors, concentric Volume, Balance and Bass & Treble controls, and buttons for FM Muting, Mode, Tape Monitor, Noise Filter and a Loudness button that contours the sound dynamics perfectly for low level listening.

While the manual gives this a "Dynamic Power Output" of 82W @ 4Ω, we prefer to use the more reasonable "RMS Power" rating of 44 Watts, 22 W/Ch into 8Ω or 58W, 2x 29 W/Ch @ 4Ω @ 1kHz. While it does have a respectable Total harmonic distortion (THD) of only 0.8%, bring down the power and you'll see an impressive 0.1%, far below what the human ear can detect. Remember, these are what audiophiles call "Vintage Watts," from an era where, unlike today, it was a sin to manipulate or elaborate the power ratings!
The front panel has a 1/4" Headphone jack while the rear offers two speaker zones, an Aux Input, a Tape Loop with the Play/Rec DIN jack found in the higher-end offerings of the era, and a stereo Phono Input with a grounding post for your turntable! It also has multiple antenna terminals, an attached AM antenna, an FM DET Out jack, and two AC outlets, switched & unswitched.
The KR-2400 weighs in at just over 18 lbs and measures 13-1/2" x 5-3/8" x 19" wide including the end panels!

Condition:

This gorgeous receiver is in "Very Good" condition with minor signs of use and nice, clean front panel! Aside from a few minor scuffs to the lid, re-veneered edges and scratches & dings to the veneer, the only other things worth mentioning is a few light front panel scuffs, most too faint to make out well in the pics. This came to us with a chipped up top edge veneer on one side, so we installed new, real-wood edge veneer on both sides as seen in the pics. It was then finished with Golden Oak stain to match. All the original knobs are present & complete, as are the feet and attached AC cord. The manual had gone missing, so we are including the pictured copy. A bonus NEW FM Dipole Antenna is included, all comes in the pictured generic box with custom Styrofoam packing! Please do inspect all the pictures thoroughly for actual condition.

Service:

On inspection, this unit was working just some scratchy or inconsistent controls and a dim dial, so as with all vintage receivers it went to our tech for servicing.

First, Kenwood used certain transistors throughout this model that have known issues after 40 years. So, even though they were still working, our tech insists on replacing these transistors as they will assuredly fail some time in the near future.

While our tech does not believe in doing a "shotgun" style "re-cap" on most gear made from the mid '70's on, he does make sure there are no capacitors with detectable or known issues. This receiver had one cap that was affixed with a glue that turns conductive after 40 years, so it was also upgraded and all glue removed!

A total of 4 transistors and 1 electrolytic capacitors were upgraded to brand new. high quality parts from Onsemi, Nichicon, Rubycon, etc., no used or NOS components!

Only a few lamps were still working, but as they were most likely going to fail soon all the lamps were replaced with long-life LED's! But first, our tech did a socket upgrade on the meter so we had a greater choice of colors to install. We installed Cool White LED's in the dial that shine through the multi-colored dial with the best consistency. Then the popular Green LED was chosen for the meter that contrasts the dial beautifully. But, if you prefer a Warm White LED that shines through blue, just let us know BEFORE buying or sending an offer and we will switch it out for you free of charge! Both the Stereo indicator and pointer were also upgraded to LED's so you won't have to worry about them either.

Once upgraded, when adjusting the FM tuner the stereo indicator would not light. This was tracked down to a bad MPX IC chip. So a NOS uPC554C was installed which brought the FM indicator back to life! It's this kind of thoughtful, preventative servicing that makes it smart to buy from a company with an experienced, in-house technician!

All vintage receivers receive the following services and much more, all performed by our qualified technician:

Lid is removed & unit is inspected to determine if any attempted amateur repairs exist that need to be corrected, or substandard parts that need replacement
The exterior, all knobs & plexis are cleaned & detailed
While the front panel is removed for cleaning, all attachments are re-glued and dried out foam inserts replaced.
All switches & pots are cleaned internally with Specialist Contact Cleaner (proven superior to DeoxIT by our customers), while those with special needs receive the less aggressive DeoxIT F-5
All lamps that are out, or believed to be prone to failure, are replaced if necessary. LEDs are used whenever compatible
Any faulty components, or those with known issues, such as jacks, fuse-holders, feet, etc., are replaced
All PC boards are inspected; all questionable solder joints are re-flowed
All electrolytic caps are inspected for bulging or leakage, those that are at risk or have known issues are checked with the Huntron Tracker (allows evaluation while in-circuit so component does not need to be removed). All questionable caps are replaced with brand new parts, not NOS!
DC offset is adjusted & channel levels are calibrated & balanced
Tuner is cleaned and both AM & FM aligned
Front panel is cleaned & detailed before reassembly
Cabinet is cleaned & detailed, any wood is polished with Old English

Testing:

After servicing, we set it up on our test bench and it did not disappoint, both channels drove our speakers with the powerful, warm, distortion-free signal these analog receivers are known for. All inputs, outputs and features were confirmed operational and the tuner spins smoothly. We are in a remote area, still we were able to pull in all our local FM stations with the included wire antenna, activating the tuning meter and lighting the Stereo lamp. Further testing was performed, if there is a specific feature you would like to know more about just let us know before buying. What a great find for the vintage audiophile!

Please remember, there are multiple ways to measure output wattage, "Peak," "Music," "RMS", "Continuous," "Maximum," & "Total" just to name a few. In addition, this value can change drastically depending on the impedance of the speakers being driven. Typically, our title will give the "Total" value, while the description will give more detailed information. We suggest you do independent research to be assured you are making informed comparisons when shopping.
