Up for auction is this Skaneateles, New York Obsolete Banknote. This note was payable at “Mechanics Bank, Syracuse at Skaneateles, New York”. The note is unsigned and was monetized on November 1, 1862. The overall size of the note is: 2-1/8 “ tall x 5-1/16” wide. This note can be found in the book “New York State Script and Private Issues” by Gordon L. Harris. The catalog number is Harris #H25. The 5 Cent Note is a Rarity - 5 with 11 – 25 notes known. The Serial Number is: 6780.
This Banknote is printed in 2 Colors, Pink overall (almost completely faded) and Black, and the Security Banknote Printer listed on the note is: Latimer Brothers & Seymour, Engr. New York.
The central vignette on the 5 Cent Note depicts a Canal Boat & Farm, Horse & Farmhouse in background. The larger left vignette is Liberty with Pole and Shield. There is a 5 Cents in cartouche @ upper right. "Five Cents" at far left border in fancy lathe work. The reverse of this note is unprinted. This Banknote has a piece missing at the upper left corner that measures ¼ of an inch x ¾ of an inch. There is a repair at the lower left corner. There is an internal split at the upper right of the central vignette. Lastly there is a bit of ink erosion at the serial number. These defects are all very common on a circulated Obsolete Banknote that is 160+ years old with this very thin paper. I grade this note as a XF -. Please look the scans over carefully and judge the quality of the note for yourself before bidding!
