BABYLON (Lion reverse) AR SILVER TETRADRACHM under Seleucus I Nicator. He became Chiliarch at Partition of Babylon, in 323 BC. Became Satrap of Babylon, 321 BC, Died 281 BC.
In my judgment, instead of being a fourrée, this coin appears to have been minted from silver with impurities in it. Please bear in mind that about 2300 years ago, they did not have the same metallurgical standards that they do today, or even during the time of the ancient Roman Empire.
Rationale: Based on the weight being 14.18 grams, it does not seem to be sufficiently underweight to be a fourrée coin. Please take a careful look at the photos and please judge for yourself.
Also, in the decades that I’ve been collecting ancient coins, I’ve noticed that when you do come across a Babylon lion tetradrachm, the overwhelming majority of them are what I would call “UNC-Ancients”.
In other words: Most of the ones that you do see available, look like the ones that you see encapsulated by the major encapsulating firms, and they look like they could have been minted yesterday or last year.
When you take a good look at this Babylon lion tetradrachm, you can be assured that this one is genuine, and has been around for approximately 2,300 years!
