This specific hand-formed crystal piece was part of the "Special Animals" series (5500-5508) introduced in 1971-1972. Described as "Special Fish, Shape 5501 (1971, Lloyd Atkins)" this bulbous fish was designed for Steuben by Lloyd Atkins in 1971.

Steuben introduced the Hand Cooler line of crystal in the late 1970s as a modern reinterpretation of the porcelain and glass objects used by Victorian ladies in the 19th century to stay cool at social gatherings. Each piece was a diminutive oval shaped symbolic sculpture of a creature.
