Stephen Seymour Thomas (1868-1956) artist, was born in San Augustine, Texas. Thomas was a known artist in Texas at an early age. A successful exhibition in NYC at age 16 enabled him to study at the Art Students League for three years under William Merritt Chase and James Carroll Beckwith, and at age 24, he had the distinction of being placed in Who’s Who in America. He advanced his training at the Académie Julian in Paris under Jules Lefebvre and Benjamin Constant and continued living in Paris for 25 years. Thomas had great success there as a portraitist and genre painter. Returning to the U.S. just before WWI, he lived in NYC until moving to La Crescenta, Southern California in 1915. Thomas is internationally known for his portraits of notables in both the U.S. and Europe. One of his presidential portraits of Woodrow Wilson hangs in the White House.
