2005 Smart Roadster – Light Special Edition |
80,300 miles | Last of its kind
Production ended in November 2005, making
this one of the final Smart Roadsters ever built — a car Top Gear named Fun Car
of the Year for 2005. Just 43,000 were made in total, and they're not making
any more.
This is the Light special edition
— no cruise control, no extras, no distractions. Just a turbocharged
rear-engined 698cc three-cylinder, rear-wheel drive, and a chassis that rewards
every bend. If you want mod cons, look elsewhere. If you want a car that makes
you feel alive, read on.
I've owned it five years and it's been
completely reliable — motorway miles to London, back roads through North
Yorkshire, whatever the mood demands. Timing chains replaced at 73k, new
battery, good tyres and brakes. The lacquer is lifting on the bonnet and the
wheels would benefit from a refurb, but it drives exactly as it should and I've
not hidden a thing — the pictures show it all.
One thing every Smart Roadster buyer asks
about: roof leaks. I've not had any issues. Sure, If you want to hold a pressure washer to it, it will, but it has lived outside all threw my ownership and it's been fine.
It's ready for summer and needs an owner
who'll actually enjoy it as I'm finding it more and more difficult to find the time to. That's the only reason it's going.
