During the infamous
Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava (October 25, 1854), then Captain Soame Gambier Jenyns served with the 13th Light Dragoons. His role is legendary among military historians for his remarkable survival and composure under fire.
Key Actions During the Charge
Leading the Retreat:
After the Brigade reached the Russian guns and began their desperate
withdrawal, Jenyns was one of the few officers left mounted and capable
of organizing the survivors. He is credited with rallying the remnants
of the 13th Light Dragoons and the 17th Lancers to fight their way back
through the Russian cavalry.
Survival Against the Odds:
Despite his horse being wounded and his clothing riddled with bullet
holes, Jenyns himself remained largely unhurt. He was one of only eight officers from his regiment to return from the valley.
The "Iron Man" Reputation:
Jenyns became famous for his coolness. Legend has it that upon
returning to the British lines, he immediately sat down, lit a pipe, and
began calmly discussing the tactical errors of the charge as if he had
just returned from a routine exercise
Legacy and Recognition
Promotion:
For his conspicuous gallantry and leadership during the Crimean
campaign, he was promoted to Major and eventually reached the rank of Colonel.
Honors: He was awarded the CB (Companion of the Order of the Bath) and the Legion of Honour by the French for his bravery.
Historical Record:
His letters and accounts from the front provided historians with some
of the most vivid primary sources regarding the chaos and heroism of the
Light Brigade.
