Guy Buffet (1943-1923) was a Parisian illustrator and painter who often gleaned inspiration from his time in France and the United States. He grew up in Montparnasse, a Parisian neighborhood where Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, and Henri Matisse had all lived, and his father encouraged him to follow his artistic passions. At 14 years old, Buffet began studying full-time at the Beaux Arts School of Toulon, France. After serving in the French Navy from ages 18 to 20, Buffet moved to Hawaii, where he stayed with the prominent Cooke family in Molokai. The Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts commissioned several works from Buffet during this time.
