Description: Hardcover. Octavo, 8.5 in. x 6 in., pp. xxvii, [1], 569. Illustrated with 4 color lithographic plates, 28 full-page black and white plates, dozens of woodcuts, and one fold-out map in the pocket on the rear pastedown. Dark blue cloth boards with gilt title, crown, and outline of Africa to front. Gilt title and decoration to spine. Rubbing to spine ends and corners. Spine is slightly shaken with the front and rear hinges just starting. Threads are holding but weakened in the preliminary pages. Previous owner's signature and date (1887) to title page. Map is whole but a touch fragile, with some light dgewear. Good.

Verney Lovett Cameron (1844-1894) was a UK naval officer, explorer and author After Henry Stanley had found David Livingstone in central Africa (and lost him), Cameron mounted a second expedition, which found the explorer's body. He was subsequently the first European to cross Africa east to west. In contemporary terms, his explorations were comparatively enlightened: he did not shoot animals, except for food; and he did not murder Africans. Most of his early work consists of nonfiction descriptions of his travels.... After an exceedingly active life, Cameron fell on his head off a horse in rural England and died immediately.(from the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction).
