"I first met Herbert List in Hamburg in 1929. Herbert was at that time the centre of a group of friends who represented for me all that was freest, most open-minded, most consciously new about the new Germany. They were the Children of the Sun. To them, far more important than politics, business, self-promotion, was 'life'. 'Life' consisted of friendship, free love, the cultivation of their own bodies, nature and the sun. Their weakness perhaps was that they did not understand that at some point in history these values would be swept away, and they together with them unless they had a strong will to self-preservation.
