Perkins was widely recognized as a scholar of the Syriac language and the various ethnic groups of Iran, especially the Nestorians, Christian Aramaic speakers. He was an ethnically aware watercolorist whose colorful drawings of various ethnic groups of northwest Iran are in this book, showing ethnic costumes - their colors and fabrics - during the mid-19th century.
