The “Battle of Berlin” heralded the end of the Second World War in the European theater of war. This major offensive launched by the Soviet Red Army advanced directly towards the capital of the Third Reich after breaking through the German defense lines on the Oder. The city itself was defended by soldiers from the Wehrmacht, the Waffen SS, the “Hitler Youth” and the “Volkssturm” and was the scene of the last and fiercest battles of the war.
The Soviet armed forces under the leadership of Marshals Zhukov and Konev - based on an overwhelming superiority in soldiers, vehicles and artillery - forced May 1945 the handover and surrender of the city. The Reichstag building, the seat of the Imperial Parliament, had enormous symbolic value and set the stage for the final acts of the conflict in Europe. The Red Army soldier hoisting the Soviet flag on the rubble of the Reichstag at the end of the Battle of Berlin is one of the most iconic images of World War II.
