With soft case, battery module takes 4xAA. Works, with two problems. Mainly, the take up clutch slips too much, this thing can barely fast forward and will eat tapes. Being a properly chunky cast aluminum thing, it can eat a LOT of tape before stalling.  While it's open, the cassette door hangs, must be adjusted towards the hinges a bit to eject properly.
