I was doing a historical textile lecture a few years back...and I always bring sample pieces for a show and tell type deal...people are encouraged to bring their own vintage decorator fabrics as part of the show and tell so I can give what info I have...these lectures you wouldn't think would be so emotional...but they are...a woman so soft spoken...she was quite a spirited 80 something year old...she was hunched over from horrible scoliosis...and arthritic...she drove from hours away to see me speak...she had followed me for years...she could barely operate a computer...but she managed to find me and come meet me at that show...she sprung up at question time and said her name was Dixie Dempsy and she drove all the way from Tallahasse Florida to see me...because she wanted to feel me...she wanted our love for vintage textiles to be shared together...she brought the most beautiful fabric with her...it was a drapery panel that belonged to her mother...it was this same pattern and colorway of blue...when she held it...it was as if she connected with her mother as she told of her memories and life growing up with these things that are still around...even when those they evoke spirituous nostalgia...are not...she captivated the audience...she was the only one who actually lived it...and became part of my life...my energy...you know that special feeling when you hold something precious...she was so precious...
