Product Description
Igbo statue from Nigeria. Original piece over 50 years old.
The Igbos (or Ibos) are one of the three major ethnic groups of Nigeria, of which they constitute approximately eighteen percent of the population. They are located mainly in the south-eastern part of the country (limited by Benue to the north and the Niger River to the west), but also constitute a significant part of the population of the country's two main cities: Lagos to the west and Kano to the north. Their languages are Igbo and its different dialects.
One of the main characteristics of Igbo masks is that they are painted in the color white, the color of the spirit (Mmwo). One of the best known masks for the spirit is the famous Agbogho (woman) Mmuo or Mmwo (spirit) which allows the Igbo to conceptualize the idea they have of the ideal young woman. The mask is worn by a man and is danced during harvest or sowing festivals, also during funerals of important people.
