Postal scales were introduced in the mid 19th Century after Rowland Hill (the founder of the postage stamp) suggested that letters should be charged by weight rather than number of pages. After this, most wealthy homes had their own set as the latest piece of technology! This auction is for a great set of vintage brass postal scales by the Victorian company John Heath of Birmingham . This company was one of the many pen makers based in Birminham in Victorian times and continued trading until the 1980s

This set has a set of weights

1/2 oz 1oz and 2 oz

They clearly thought postal rates were there to stay! The set has a polished fruitwood base base with the patina only possible through use and age. This is supported on four wooden bun feet.

The scales measure 13cm by 9cm by 8cm high. A highly collectable piece of history.
