The Big Chill captures that moment when chill-out rooms, dub bass, ambient drift and post-rave atmosphere still felt like one connected culture, and the selection moves nicely between haze, space and low-end weight. Beyond’s Ambient Dub series was closely tied to the Birmingham club Oscillate, which was run by Bobby Bird of Higher Intelligence Agency. Original Rockers later became Rockers Hi-Fi, so this compilation also catches that group in an earlier phase.
