Book 1 of The Devil Is Dead Trilogy
by R. A. Lafferty
Lafayette, LA: Manuscript Press, 1979
First Edition (stated), First Printing
Hardcover. Publisher's red cloth with gold titles to spine. [iv] + 283 pp. 5-5/8" x 7-3/4".
Very good in fair dust jacket.
Bookshop stamp & ink scribbles to front end paper; previous owner's embossed name to fore edge of front end paper & following page. Scattered small marks to page margins (I only found about 10 occurrences, & some of these are possibly "noise" from the printing process.) Underline to last line on p. 172. Otherwise, interior clean. Binding firm & square. Covers have mild softening to spine ends; light bumping to bottom corners. Dust jacket has wear along edges, with chipping & tears at corners & spine ends; tear & scraping to top half of rear flap fold; a 1-1/2 inch tear to top edge of rear panel; short tear to bottom front edge; several water spots to front & rear panels & spine; sticker ghost & faint writing to rear panel; general toning & light soiling; darkening to spine. DJ comes protected by new, archival cover.
An attractive & desirable copy of the first book in Lafferty's The Devil Is Dead trilogy, providing insight into the lives of Finnegan and the Dirty Five at the close of World War II. A great addition to your collection or as a gift. Scarce.
