- About Ankara (also known as African wax print or Dutch wax print). : Ankara is a vibrant cotton fabric decorated with bold, repeating patterns and bright colors, traditionally made using wax-resist or industrial roller printing techniques While it originated from Indonesian batik designs introduced by Dutch traders in the 19th century, it was adopted and redefined across West and Central Africa, where it became a symbol of cultural identity, status, and celebration. When new, Ankara can feel stiff because of the printing process and the cotton weave. Over time, washing and wear soften it, but in its fresh state it retains a firm texture. It’s widely used for dresses, shirts, headwraps, and accessories, and is especially popular for weddings, festivals, and other cultural events
