DESCRIPTION: The beautiful hand painted vase was produced using a yellow, black, green, white & light orange color palette. The most striking colors of this vase are the yellow used extensively in the roses and the black used in the white gardenia scene which flows around the top shoulder of the vase. The handles and the rims are painted gold. There is also thin gold outlining on the white gardenia blooms and their green leaves.
CONDITION: While this vase is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, hairlines or repairs. There is extremely minor gold wear on the edges of the handles.
DIMENSIONS: The vase has a height of 6 5/8". The widest diameter is 3 7/8". The 6 scalloped base is 2 11/16".
HISTORY/MARKS: Morimura Bros. formed the trading and decorating company in 1876 which evolved into Noritake. Noritake Company has a rich history of producing fine bone china all the way from January 1, 1904 when the Nippon Toki Kaisha Ltd - the forerunner to the present Noritake Company - was formed in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan. The first reported U.S. registry for a Noritake backstamp for importing is 1911. The backstamp on this set is the green M-in-Wreath Mark. The M-in-Wreath Mark is attributed to Noritake and its forerunner in the 1890’s to 1921 time period. In Collecting Noritake A to Z Art Deco & More, David Spain shows that Noritake substituted Japan for Nippon in their backstamps starting in 1918. In ABC’s of Collecting Nippon Porcelain, Van Patten attributes the M-in-Wreath’s mark #47 to since 1911. This seems to narrow the window of use for the M-in-Wreath mark to 1911-1918.
