The C-119, developed by Fairchild based on the earlier C-82 Packet, was one of the most important transport aircraft of the 1950s. The C-119C model was equipped with two 28-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-4360 four-wheel radial engines and differed from later variants in, among other things, its nose landing gear with single wheel and a different rear design. 

Production of the C-119C accelerated after the outbreak of the Korean War, and these aircraft were soon used in most of the conflict's transport missions. After the war, a large number of the machines were delivered to France, where they were used extensively in Indochina. Another, less well-known but equally important task was the transport of materials for the construction of the DEW Line radar stations in the far north of the American continent. Numerous examples of the C-119C were subsequently modernized to adapt them to the standards of later models.
