Some years ago I was doing interior painting on a home outside city of Boston, Massachusetts,  when the owner gave me this portrait. He didn’t know who the subject was or where the work originated. His great uncle had been a painter, but the initials “A M” seen in the lower right-hand corner, didn’t match his.

The painting itself is in fair condition. It has been expertly sketched on bare masonite, which has been minimally prepared, if at all. In preparation for this sale I've become aware of the existence of the Boston Expressionism Movement that spanned the mid-century. I had already considered that the piece had been created somewhere in the 1930s to 1950s. . The dark palette and thick impasto strokes help confirm its belonging to that period. The presence of the S. Alpert label on the verso is certainly supportive. If interested you will need to do your own research. I think that possibly, there may be more to be found on the artist.

As I said the painting is in fair condition. I don't see much wear to the image but the masonite may be scuffed in spots. Looking closely at the painting it seems that possibly the board was not perfect to begin with. There may be some water damage in the upper right hand corner, and the frame is worn and will need some restoration.

I'm an art lover but not an expert, and don't really have the time to do any additional research.
