The Ca.311 was designed as a reconnaissance aircraft that could also be used for light bomber and ground attack operations. The Italian company Officine Caproni first developed the Ca.310, which later became the Ca.311. The aircraft was distinguished by its elegant lines, reached a top speed of 220 knots and was characterized by an almost completely glass nose, which was specially designed for optimized ground observation.

Its armament consisted of three 7.7 mm machine guns: one in a ventral position (under the fuselage), one in a rotating Lanciani turret in a dorsal position (on the back of the fuselage), and one mounted on the left wing. The aircraft was also able to transport up to 400 kilograms of bombs in the fuselage. From 1940 onwards, the Ca.311 was used in all theaters of war - from North Africa to the Balkans to Russia.

Despite its limited defensive armament and certain problems due to the rather weak engine power, it was very popular with the crews thanks to its maneuverability and reliability. Numerous examples remained in service until 1945 and were used for training purposes - both at the Regia Aeronautica in southern Italy and at the Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana in the north of the country.
