The Soviet Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 fighter aircraft is the most frequently produced supersonic jet aircraft in aviation history. The aircraft, commonly known by the NATO codename “Fishbed,” was a mid-1950s aviation project whose design followed the natural evolution of swept-wing fighter aircraft.
The delta wing, the aerodynamic shape, the high speed, the enormous maneuverability as well as the variety of weapons and the payload capacity were the decisive factors for their commercial success. In fact, the MiG-21 was standard equipment for the fighter squadrons of the Soviet Union and the then Warsaw Pact countries.
The fighter aircraft was also purchased and used outside Europe for many years by numerous global allies of the Soviet Union. The MiG-21 “Bis” version was one of the most technically advanced versions of this type. Thanks to its powerful Tumanski jet engine, the “Fishbed” reached a top speed of 2,100 km/h. Its main armament consisted of a 23 mm cannon as well as four underwing stations, which enabled it to accommodate a wide range of other weapons. The MiG-21's operational history was extremely extensive, spanning military conflicts from the 1960s to the 1990s.
