Limoges 4 Luncheon Plates H&A Balleroy Artist Gismonda Floral Gold 1908-1937

An Elegant Decorative Set of 4 LUNCHEON PLATES 8 3/4" from B&Cie. (Henri Balleroy) Limoges, France, large HAND PAINTED FLORAL SPRAY with GREEN LEAVES w/Gold and wide Decorative Border, HAND PAINTED by Artist Gismonda, circa 1908-1937

DESCRIPTION:  The plate was decorated by a talented artist, Gismonda.  The color palette used is pink, blue, green & yellow on white w/wide gold bands.  The rim of the plate, as is the wide band on the verge, is trimmed in bold gold.  The pink and white flowers along with the blue flowers are nestled in green leaves form a medallion on the center of the plate.  The wide trim between the rim and the verge is composed of warm yellow floral scrollwork with tassels and delicate black outlining.  Behind this is a light yellow background with concentrated very wavy scrollwork lines and curves.  The plate is signed on the front just below the green leaves next to the blue flowers.  See photo #12.  We have more of the plates in our eBay store.

CONDITION:  While this decorative plate set is classified as used, its condition is superb.  We can find no defects or damage.  There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines.  See the photos to judge the beauty of this plate for yourself.

DIMENSIONS:  The plates have a diameter of 8 3/4" and a height of 7/8".

HISTORY/MARKS:  Henri worked with Mandavy and Mavaleix from 1901-1908.  In 1908, Henri the decorator and his brother, Antoine the modeler, taking a temporary location formed the company manufacturing decorative porcelain accessories and tableware.  In 1912 they took over an existing factory that had been in operation  since 1860 continuing until 1937 when Henri closed the factory.  The brothers were from a family of Limoges porcelain painters and they produced pieces of high quality.  The Limoges whiteware mark is B & Cie (Henri Balleroy) cited in Mary Frank Gaston Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain as mark #1 page 426.  This mark was used 1908-1937.  There is also the  decorator mark HetA Balleroy Freres for Henri & Antoine Ballory.   This is very similar to Gaston's mark #2 page 426 that was used 1908-1937.  So, the circa is 1908-1937.
