Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at an older Electro Voice 950 "Cardax" model crystal cardioid microphone. This simple, elegant and timeless design came right from Buchanan, Michigan during the mid 1940's to the late 1950's and has a look similar (but distinctive) to the Shure 55 which was equally beautiful with it's clean lines and deco appearance. Certainly one of the most beautiful mics of all time and it comes with a period E.V 423A model desk stand in which to display.
Pic # 2 shows this very model in the E.V line up of cardioid microphones being sold at that time in 1946.
This 950 Cardax utilized the crystal element which had a decent sound when they were new but this one no longer works which is pretty typical for a crystal mic of this age. The mic is better off being used for display, prop or repair purposes. This mic has been thoroughly cleaned and tested. The wiring and all the other components are still inside and there is plenty of room in these mics to upgrade if so desired for a higher quality sound. A newer dynamic element or even a ribbon mod would be great for this mic. I have personally installed dynamic elements in these but I don't do any ribbon work.
I know a gentleman who could turn this into an outstanding studio quality ribbon mic if one wanted to do so.
As seen in the pics provided...the polished chrome finish has typical lite wear. Lite pitting and fine scratches but there are no dents, engravings or fractures. Let the pictures be your guide. I try to provide the most detailed, up close photos available so you know exactly what you are getting and no buyers remorse so common with these older mics. The joint mechanism holds strong and the switch mechanism works just as it should. The black screens are not faded and show no wear. Threads for the cable and stand are perfect. The 950 badge looks great and the on / off switch works perfectly.
This mic I would rate this an easy 7 + on a scale of 1 - 10. A fun piece to display anywhere in your home, office or studio.
MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS PART OF THIS SALE...
It's a period 1950's E.V 423A model desk stand that really compliments the mic and makes for a fairly stable platform. It has the built in toggle switch though it's no longer wired.
The 423A comes with the 6 inch chrome riser and satin chrome aluminum base. It has typical wear on both the base and riser in the form of scuff marks and scratches. The stand still has the 3 rubber bottom pads and as you can see they are in great shape. There is a hole in the rear side of the base for a cable to thread through if needed.
Total dimensions with mic and stand are 12 1/2 inches tall X 5 inches wide.
As always...
