A carved wooden mask form with painted and incised geometric designs and a well weathered surface. Unlike most masks, the phumbu was seldom used. It remained enshrined in the chiefs house until he needed to reassert his power during times of social crisis. and was brought out as a symbol of authority.

  This mask shows obvious weathering and wear, and some age ,though it is difficult to determine if it was used traditionally or carved to sell.  Pende peoples, DRC/ Congo, Africa.

The mask measures 26 inches tall x 8.5 inches wide. *There is no display stand included, only used for photography purposes.
