Vietnamese or Kinh (Vietnamese: Người Việt or Người Kinh) are an ethnic group from the northern part of what constitutes the current Vietnam and southern China. They form the majority ethnicity of Vietnam and constitute 86 % of the population (census of 1999). The official name of the group is Kinh (meaning "of the capital"), to distinguish them from the other ethnic groups of Vietnam.

In China, they include, in addition to Kinh residents of Vietnamese nationality, one of the officially recognized minorities, under the name of Gin or Jing (京族 in Mandarin), which mainly live in the province of Guangxi (Vietnamese: Quảng Tây).

On the geographical and linguistic levels, the Viets belong to Southeast Asia. But a long period of Chinese domination resulted in a strong cultural influence which brings them closer to East Asia.

The language of the Viet is the Vietnamese. With the Muong, it is part of the Viet-Muong languages group of the Môn-Khmer branch of the Austroasiatic family.

The predominant religions among Viets are Confucianism and Mahayana Buddhism. Catholicism and Protestantism are widespread. There are also local religions, Hoa Hao and Cao đài.

The Mâu Tho. Vietnamese shamanism?

Tho a/au, or "cult of mothers". is practiced in the north and in the center of Vietnam, as well as in the Vietnamese diaspora. It is a form of devotion which is mainly characterized by sessions during which medium ladies (Bà Dong) are successively possessed by the Holy Mothers of the Heaven, Mountains and Forests, Water, and Lands, as well as by other "geniuses of the four palaces". We describe here the pantheon and the practice of this cult, emphasizing those of its elements (mediation between the sexes for example) which are similar to shamanism and which could historically proceed from a prehistoric Vietnamese shamanism.
