This letter was sent the day after this aircraft carrier (USS Randolph) forced a USSR sub to the surface during the Cuban Missile Crisis. This action almost resulted in the submarine firing a nuclear missile, possibly triggering a nuclear war. The letter states that "ALL DAY YESTERDAY WE TRACKED A SUB BELONGING TO THE USSR. WE TOOK PICTURES OF IT YESTERDAY AND LATE LAST NIGHT TOO. OUR PLANES BROUGHT IT TO THE SURFACE AROUND EIGHT LAST NIGHT AND THEN STARTED TO TAKE PICTURES OF IT. THAT IS THE ONLY RUSSIAN CONTACT WE HAVE HAD THAT I KNOW OF. A very interesting historical document.
