Charles Austen enviro® ETA Series Air Pumps
Professional diaphragm pumps with alarm

Charles Austen ETA air pumps are weatherproof linear diaphragm pumps with a built-in low-pressure alarm. Very popular for septic tank systems and koi ponds.
Seven models available from 40 to 200 litres per minute. The alarm is what separates the ETA from the standard ET range: if pressure in the airline drops — a split pipe, a pulled-off fitting, a worn diaphragm, a stopped pump — an audible buzzer sounds and a red LED beacon lights on the unit.

Each pump comes on a fitted UK plug, with the rubber elbow and hose clamps needed to connect it.

Applications include garden ponds and water features, freshwater and marine aquariums, hydroponic and aquaponic nutrient aeration including RDWC, compost tea brewing, and septic, wastewater and water treatment aeration.

Choosing your model
Model Air output Max. tank depth
ET40A40 L/min1.2 m
ET60A60 L/min1.5 m
ET80A80 L/min1.75 m
ET100A100 L/min1.9 m
ET120A120 L/min2.0 m
ET150A150 L/min
ET200A200 L/min
Maximum tank depth is the deepest the pump is rated to work at. Going deeper adds back pressure and shortens diaphragm life. Full specifications are further down the page.

We think… The alarm is the whole reason to choose an ETA over the standard ET range. A blockage or failure can have real consequences, now a buzzer and a beacon on the unit will let you know if pressure drops. Underneath they are the same well-built, serviceable pumps.

Key features
  • Built-in low-pressure alarm — a buzzer and a red LED beacon on the unit
  • Silence it without stopping it — a TEST / MUTE / RUN switch lets you prove the alarm works and mute it while the pump keeps running.
  • Serviceable — the filter element washes out and the diaphragm is user-replaceable, so a tired pump can be reconditioned rather than binned. Service kits available separately.
  • Thermal cutout — shuts the pump down if it overheats and restarts it automatically once cool.
  • Weatherproof build — for outdoor siting in a sheltered position.
  • CE marked and UL certified, with a 2-year manufacturer warranty against manufacturing defects.

Questions people ask

What sets the alarm off?
Loss of pressure in the airline. A split or disconnected pipe, a worn diaphragm or a stopped pump will all do it. The sensor switches at around 0.04 bar, against a normal running pressure of 0.10 to 0.15 bar. It signals both ways, an audible buzzer and a red LED beacon on the unit, so a fault is obvious across a dark plant room as well as audible.

Can I silence the alarm without stopping the pump?
Yes. The switch has three positions, TEST, MUTE and RUN. Set it to RUN once installed. TEST proves the buzzer sounds, MUTE silences it while the pump carries on running.

How noisy is it?
Quiet for the output, but not silent. Like every diaphragm pump it produces a continuous hum, 40 to 45 dB.

Can I use it outdoors?
Yes, in a sheltered position under cover. Charles Austen describe the ETA series as weatherproof but publish no IP rating, so treat it as protected from the weather rather than sealed against it. Outdoor electrical work should be done by a qualified electrician.

Is it serviceable?
Yes, the filter element washes out and the diaphragm is user-replaceable with service kits available. Clean the filter at least every six months, more often somewhere dusty. The manufacturer recommends a service at least every 18 months.

Why is my air output lower than the table says?
The quoted output is measured at the pump’s rated pressure. Anything that adds back pressure reduces it — deeper diffusers, longer or narrower airline, sharp bends, and air stones that have silted up. Larger bore pipe, gentle bends and clean stones all help. It is worth getting right: excessive back pressure is the commonest cause of premature diaphragm failure, and running with the outlet closed off will overheat the pump.

Do I need a non-return valve?
Only if the pump sits at or below water level, but it is always a good idea. Site it above the water line where you can. If you cannot, fit a non-return valve in the outlet pipe, or water will siphon back into the pump when it is switched off.

What else do I need to buy?
Airline and air stones, which are not included. We stock both, along with non-return valves and manifolds if you are splitting the air between several stones.

“Rated at” is the back pressure the air output is measured at, not a maximum working pressure. Power is the rating-plate figure, with the draw at rated pressure in brackets where the two differ. Only the rated-pressure figure is published for the ET150A and ET200A.
