A beautiful ROYAL DOULTON CUP & SAUCER, GRANTHAM pattern, HAND DECORATED Floral with Green Trim on Cup's Handle, Fluted Swirl Mold, Circa 1934-1964 from Burslem, Staffordshire, England
DESCRIPTION: This is a superb quality decorative set cup & saucer. The fluted swirl pattern called GRANTHAM #D5477 looks so elegant with the colorful florals with their bright green leaves. The cup has a smooth rim and green trim on the handle. The saucer has a scalloped rim with fluted swirls.
CONDITION: While this set classified as used, we can find no chips, nicks, rubbings, scratches, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. There appears to be absolutely no wear to the vivid colors and no crazing. Look in the photos to see this. The lack of utensil scratches on the cup and saucer attests to the high quality of the stoneware. There is no wear to the green trim on the handle. The cup & saucer is beautiful and whimsically decorated.
DIMENSIONS: The Portland shaped cup has a diameter of 3 5/8" with a height of 2 5/16" and a capacity of 6 ounces. The deep saucer has a diameter of 5 3/4" and a height of 7/8".
HISTORY/MARKS: Henry & James Doulton purchased an interest in Pinder, Bourne & Co. in 1877. Pinder left the business in 1882 and it was reconstituted under the name Doulton & Co., Burslem. The Royal Warrant and the right to use “Royal” in the name of its products were granted in 1901. The business continued under Henry Lewis Doulton from 1897-1919 and then under his grandson, Lewis Eric Hooper, who remained chairman until 1955. The mark on this is Geoffrey Godden's mark #1334 (Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks) used from 1930 onward due to “Made in England”. The D #’s for Royal Doulton china indicated #D5477 was introduced in 1934. Production was 1934-1964.
