Anton Lang Pottery Figure Wanderer In The Storm Signed Germany 13.5x10in Read

Condition: Pre-owned. Vintage. Pottery figure, 13 1/2” tall x 10” wide x 5” wide, The figure was designed by Anton Lang’s son Karl Lang and hand-signed by Anton Lang. Karl Lang designed the piece after a famous sculpture by German artist Ernst Barlach called “Wanderer In The Wind”. Between 1925 and 1930, only eight or nine examples were made at the Lang workshop by Karl and Anton working together. The first prototype had a thin support at base-bottom which did not hold well and subsequent examples transitioned to a thicker support and final examples possessed two supports. This figure is possibly the second example based on the examples that possessed a thicker support at base-bottom.

Other interesting facts: “In 1923-1924, Anton Lang toured the United States as the leader of the “Oberammergau in America Home Art Exhibition” which was selling decorative arts to raise money for the people of Oberammergau. The German economy was a wreck after World War I. Deals were signed with retail stores to sell Oberammergau decorative arts. In particular decorative arts were sold through retailer in Chicago. This continued until the Stock Market crash in 1929 and the Great Depression.” Thank you Charles Miller from Red Dust Antiques for providing this interesting history surrounding Anton Lang.
