1940's Staffordshire art deco modernist style gilded bowl
with hand painted flowers
Length of bowl 25.5 cm.
Height of bowl approx. 8 cm.
Good condition, there is a little wear of the gilding on the handles (see photos)
Marked on the base Made in England B
Pottery marked "Made in England B"
often indicates that the item was produced during the Wartime Concentration Scheme (roughly 1942–1945), where the British government restricted production to specific factories to save materials and labour for the war effort. The letter 'B' signifies the factory group, and it was commonly used by several manufacturers in the Staffordshire area.
The main pottery company associated with the "Made in England B" mark is:
- Barker Bros Ltd (Meir Works, Longton): This firm used the "Royal Tudor Ware" trade name and marked items with "Made in England B" to indicate production under the wartime concentration scheme.
